This morning, the Chiayi City Government hosted the “Showcasing Health and Strength with Confidence” fashion show at Chiayi Park, where Mayor Huang Min-hui took to the runway in stylish attire. She was joined by some of Catwalk’s senior models as well as show director, Wang Shengfen. Together they lead 97 senior participants, with an average age of 63 and the eldest at 80, in a spectacular runway performance.
Last year, Chiayi City launched Taiwan’s first-ever “Senior Strength City” initiative to promote active aging. This morning’s fashion show brought seniors together to showcase their confidence and vitality. With support from Kun Shan University and Chongren Nursing School faculty and students, the event was an intergenerational collaboration.
The show featured three themes: “Youthful Energy,” “Cool & Edgy,” and “Elegant Nobility.” Under the expert guidance of Catwalk’s senior model, Wang Shengfen, participants underwent professional posture training, styling workshops, and runway practice to prepare for their time in the spotlight. The result? A vibrant display of self-expression and health-conscious confidence.
Forty-eight Chongren Nursing School and Kun Shan University students helped style the senior participants, providing hair, makeup, and fashion coordination. Their support gave the elderly models an extra boost of confidence as they graced the runway.
One participant, 74-year-old Guan Yunan, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I love experiencing new things and continuing to pursue my dreams. Being on the runway was a rare opportunity, and the professional training made it even more exciting. The experience has truly upped my confidence!”
Another participant, 71-year-old retired principal Huang Yichun, joined the initiative at the encouragement of his wife. Together, they curated their fashion-forward outfits, demonstrating the elegance and confidence of lifelong learners.
Mayor Huang Min-hui emphasized the importance of redefining aging, stating that the “Senior Strength City” initiative integrates sports, music, arts, and culture to enhance seniors’ quality of life. She cited Dr. Lin Jingfu’s “Three Strengths of Aging”—physical strength, cognitive strength, and social engagement—encouraging seniors to continue contributing to society with confidence, warmth, and vitality.
The Chiayi Health Bureau reaffirmed its commitment to the Senior Strength City initiative, promising to offer more activities to encourage active and engaged lifestyles for seniors.
