The 2025 GQ Suit Walk is making its debut in Dadaocheng, inspired by the theme of "Timeless Romance," leading men and women through a century of history to experience the classic charm of suit culture and its contemporary interpretations. This district, rich in Taiwan’s historical memories, has been a hub of fashion and culture—from its prosperous commercial trade during the Japanese colonial era to becoming the largest fabric trading center in Taiwan. This year, Suit Walk not only revives the elegance of Dadaocheng’s past but also transforms suit culture into an urban exploration of style, taste, and a sense of ceremony.
Wearing Story Wear Suits: A Statement of Style and Attitude
This year's event features Jason Hsu (許孟哲) and Bernice Chao (趙孟姿) as style ambassadors, dressed in sustainable fashion brand Story Wear suits and wearing dress shoes from Oringo, embarking on a vintage-inspired date in Dadaocheng. Through fine wine, artisanal aesthetics, and tea houses blending Taiwanese and Japanese influences, they interpret what it means to embrace "old-school romance."
Hsu believes that suits for men go beyond just formality—they represent self-respect and discipline. "A suit doesn’t stretch like a T-shirt, so you have to maintain your physique to wear it well. A good suit can last a long time." He wears a lightweight, relaxed-fit navy blue pinstripe suit paired with classic penny loafers from Oringo, embodying a vintage yet modern style, suitable for formal occasions and casual outings.
Chao sees the rise of female empowerment as a norm, making suits an essential part of women’s fashion. "In the past, women rarely wore suits, but now, the appeal of women in suits lies in their confidence. Women with strong ideas are the most attractive." She particularly appreciates the unique design of Story Wear: "Soft fabrics combined with sleek, structured lines add depth to the overall look." She completes her outfit with double-buckle monk shoes, exuding both sophistication and elegance.
Even amid a busy life, small gestures can create a sense of ceremony—giving flowers on special days or playing music while making breakfast. As the host of the reality show Hunger Games, Hsu recently took on the role of a devoted lover in the Taiwanese period drama Oxcart Trails. "It was a long-awaited challenge for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I hope the audience can feel my deep immersion in the role."
After her children started school, Chao, who started her career as a model, decided to rekindle her passion for diving. She also set aside time for self-reflection, allowing herself a space to breathe and prepare for a new chapter in life.
The Nostalgic Romance of Dadaocheng
When asked about "old-school romance," Chao envisions a scene where a man rides a bicycle with a woman sitting sideways in a floral dress on the back seat—simple, pure, and completely immersed in the moment. Hsu, on the other hand, notes how in today’s world, people often spend their time on phones even when meeting in person. He believes that uninterrupted, focused time together is now more precious than ever.
Both have a deep connection with Dadaocheng. The red brick buildings remind Chao of her childhood memories of traditional sanheyuan courtyards. As a student, she often visited Yongle Market to cut fabric, making this district a significant part of her youth. "Every time I return here, it feels like going back to my student days."
Hsu’s earliest memories of Dadaocheng trace back to his early days in the entertainment industry when he frequently visited the area to source costumes and props. Over time, he realized that the district's charm extended far beyond its historical value. "The old buildings here always make me wonder how people lived in the past."
"This place strikes the perfect balance between old and new. While preserving its original look, it has also welcomed new industries. Historic buildings have been given new life, and traditional shops coexist with modern, trendy stores. Dadaocheng continues to evolve while retaining its classic charm," both Xu and Zhao agree. To them, Dadaocheng is not just a historical landmark but a dynamic cultural space.
Lugou Café: A Fragrant Start to the Morning
The couple visits Lugou Café, a Japanese-Western-style tea house exuding a rich nostalgic atmosphere. Seated by a wooden window, they bask in the warmth of the sunlight while enjoying hand-brewed Alishan coffee, filling the air with a rich and aromatic scent.
"Stepping in here feels like entering another era. Every detail tells a story—even the worn-out staircases seem to be speaking," Zhao remarks with a smile. "Coming here is like time-traveling—no need to rush into conversation. Just immerse yourself in the moment and let everything flow naturally."
Lijma Jewelry Studio: An Afternoon of Meaningful Creations
Lijma Jewelry Studio specializes in high-end handcrafted jewelry. Even beginners can create delicate and sentimental pieces under the guidance of expert instructors.
"The true value of handmade items isn’t in their price but in the memories they hold. When you craft something yourself, it becomes one of a kind," Zhao says. She recalls how the couple often exchanged handmade gifts—Hsu once stayed up all night folding origami carnations and carefully attaching a picture of their daughter or drawing her name and a heart on her diving fins. These gifts, though simple, were filled with thoughtfulness and deep emotion.
Bookbar 1920s: A Romantic Evening with Fine Wine
Bookbar 1920s is an independent bookstore that combines literature, philosophy, and art exhibitions, creating a space for reflection and dialogue. Collaborating with Suit Walk this year, the venue is hosting a wine-tasting salon—not just as an opportunity to savor wine, but as an exchange of worldviews, life philosophies, and self-exploration.
Even after becoming parents, the couple makes an effort to spend quality time alone, engaging in heartfelt conversations. They also keep a record of the wines they've tasted, associating flavors with memories. "Red wine is a catalyst for deep conversations. As the wine flows, discussions move beyond daily routines to more philosophical and introspective topics," says Hsu. To him, this perfectly embodies the essence of a gentleman's lifestyle.
